Thanks. The tilde in questions and exclamations (Que/Qué) is pretty clear.
Let me see if I've got it. (please correct me if I'm wrong)
(Most of these examples are from SpanishDict.com)
In questions, qué is used as
what (adj), which (adj), what (pronoun), how (adv), why (adv)
1. ¿qué hora es?, what time is it?
2. ¿qué coche prefieres?, which car do you prefer?
3. ¿qué te dijo?, what did s/he tell you?
4. ¿qué tanto?, how much?
5. ¿por qué?, why?
In exclamations, qué is used as how / what
1. ¡qué horror!, how awful!
2. ¡qué casa tan bonita!, what a beautiful house!
The problem occurs when qué or que is used in a sentence that is not a question or an exclamation.
In those cases,
qué is used as what (pronoun)
For example: no sé qué hacer, I don't know what to do.
que is used as
who/whom, that, which, than
1. la mujer que me saludó, the woman who greeted me
2. la moto que me gusta, the scooter that I like
3. la playa a la que fui, the beach to which I went
4. es más rápido que tú, s/he is faster than you
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hacía mucho tiempo que no iba, it had been a long time that (since) s/he had not gone.
Te dije que no, I told you (that) no.
